What To Expect During Your EV Charger Installation In Adelaide

Most Adelaide home installs are finished in a single visit of: 3 to 6 hours, and this is the order the work happens in.

Step 1: Assessment

A Bice Electrical electrician checks your switchboard capacity, confirms whether you have single or three phase supply, & measures the cable run from the switchboard to where the car parks. That distance & the state of the board set the price, so you get a fixed, itemised quote.

Step 3: Wiring And Mounting

Cable is run from the switchboard to the charger through the roof space, wall cavity or in conduit, kept off the floor and away from anything it could be damaged by. The charger is mounted on the garage, carport or exterior wall, or on a pedestal where there is no wall to use.

Step 2: Switchboard Work

We fit a dedicated circuit breaker with RCD protection, usually a single RCBO, in your switchboard for the charger alone. If the board is full, still has ceramic fuses or has no safety switch, we upgrade it in the same visit rather than sending you away to organise it separately.

Step 4: Testing And Handover

Every installation is tested before it is powered up, then we lodge the electrical Certificate of Compliance with the Office of the Technical Regulator. Before we leave we connect the charger to your Wi-Fi or 4G, set up the app, and plug your car in so you can see it charging.

Two Things To Check Before You Request A Quote

Two details set most of the price, and you can check both before you call.

  • Single phase or three phase power? Open your meter box. One main switch means single phase and a 7.4kW charger. A main switch three poles wide, or three service fuses, means three phase and the option of 11kW or 22kW. A photo of the board is all we need to confirm it.

  • How far is the parking spot from the switchboard, and is it indoors or outdoors? A charger on the garage wall nearest the board is the shortest run and the lowest price. A car parked on the far side of the house, outdoors, or on a driveway needs a longer run and a weatherproof mount, which we price at the assessment.

Plus, if you know it: the make and model of your EV, so we can match the charger to what the car will actually accept.

Costs to Install an EV Charger in Adelaide

Most Adelaide homes land between $1,600 and $2,800 for a 7.4kW charger installed on a dedicated circuit, though an older switchboard, a long cable run or a three-phase unit will change that. Every quote we give is a fixed price, itemised before any work starts. For the full breakdown, including running costs and the current rebate position, read our EV charger cost guide.

Does an EV Charger Need SA Power Networks Approval?

Yes, and almost every wall charger crosses the line. SA Power Networks requires approval for any EV charger rated above 20A single phase, or above 25A per phase on three phase. That captures the 7.4kW unit most Adelaide homes choose and the 22kW three phase units used on commercial sites. Bice Electrical lodges the application through the SA Power Networks portal before we start, and closes it out once the install is tested and certified.

You never need to contact SA Power Networks yourself. We handle the application, the technical compliance details and the close out as part of the job.

Approval is not required if you only ever charge from a standard 10A or 15A power point. That is the portable lead supplied with the car, and it is not built for charging a daily driver overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our EV Charger Installation

Yes. We install a dedicated circuit sized to the charger and your supply. If your board is full or outdated, we’ll recommend a switchboard upgrade to meet demand.

If your property has three-phase supply or can be upgraded, yes. We’ll assess capacity and coordinate with other loads like electric ovens and fans to balance usage.

We test your installation and cable runs. Where wiring is undersized, we provide quotes for targeted rewiring to ensure safe operation.

Most home installs take a few hours. Additional time may be required for long cable runs, trenching, or board upgrades.

Yes. We work with body corporates on load studies, metering, and access controls, and can include strata electrical services documentation for approvals.

Yes. We configure apps and can hard-wire connectivity with data cabling if Wi-Fi is weak in the garage.

We can add motion lighting via our lighting installation service and integrate CCTV for security.

Most homes use 7 kW (single-phase); three-phase sites can support 11–22 kW depending on supply. We’ll align recommendations with your switchboard capacity and testing.

Charging adds consumption, but off-peak scheduling and solar integration help manage costs. We can also review load balancing to prevent nuisance trips.

Yes. We design multi-bay solutions with load management, signage, and cable protection, and coordinate with office & shop fit-outs for a neat result.

An EV charger must be installed by a licensed electrician, and in South Australia the work has to be certified with an electrical Certificate of Compliance lodged with the Office of the Technical Regulator. Bice Electrical holds electrical contractor licence PGE 259431 and is a certified Evnex installer partner. Using an accredited installer is also what keeps the manufacturer’s warranty intact on most charger brands.

Yes, if it is rated above 20A single phase or above 25A per phase on three phase. That covers the 7.4kW and 22kW chargers most Adelaide homes and businesses install. We lodge the application through the SA Power Networks portal before installation and close it out afterwards, so there is nothing for you to submit. Charging from a standard 10A or 15A power point needs no approval.

Open your meter box and look at the main switch. One main switch or a single service fuse means single phase, which suits a 7.4kW charger and covers most Adelaide homes. Three separate fuses, or a main switch three poles wide, means three phase, which opens up 11kW and 22kW units. Send us a photo of your meter box and we will confirm it for you.

Usually not. The limit is the car’s onboard AC charger, not the wall unit. Most electric vehicles sold in Australia, including the Tesla Model Y and BYD Atto 3, accept between 7kW and 11kW on AC, so a 22kW charger adds no charging speed. We check your model’s AC limit before quoting rather than sell you capacity the car cannot use.

Most chargers go in the garage or carport, on the wall closest to the switchboard, which keeps the cable run short and the price down. Outdoor installations are fine because EV chargers are weather rated. If your car parks well away from the switchboard we will price the longer run, or a pedestal mount, at the site inspection.

We will tell you at the site inspection and quote the upgrade separately, so you see the cost before you commit. An older or full board generally needs upgrading before it can take a dedicated EV circuit safely. Where the scope allows, we complete the switchboard upgrade and the charger installation in the same visit.

Yes, with the property owner’s written permission. We can provide a scope of works and the compliance documentation for your landlord or agent to approve before we book the job in.
